Encyclopedia of Nigeria’s telecoms industry

Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTel)

Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTel) was the mobile subsidiary of the national carrier, NITEL. It was Nigeria’s first mobile network, offering analog mobile lines years before the arrival of GSM technology. Eventually, it migrated to GSM standard too, and at one time, Mtel held 11 per cent of the GSM market in the country, but eventually dying out after just a few years of operations.

The assets of Mtel (along with NITEL) were eventually acquired by NATCOM in 2015 after five failed privatisation attempts between 2001 and 2011. NATCOM is set to launch 4G services under the brand Ntel.
